As someone who has called the Shuswap home since 2006 and witnessed the region’s growth firsthand, I understand just how pressing our housing challenges are becoming. According to CMHC, Canada needs to build between 417,000 and 469,000 homes each year by 2036 to address a 2.4 million home shortfall—yet we’re currently on track for only 231,000. High construction costs and sluggish condo sales are major hurdles, making it even more difficult to close this gap. With over 25 years in real estate and a background in both property management and financial analysis, I see the impact of these figures every day—especially for families and buyers trying to find their place in communities like Salmon Arm, Blind Bay, and beyond. The numbers may look daunting, but understanding them is the first step toward meaningful change.
